Solair-E is an installation for the Computer History Museum (CHM) as part of the “Lab” exhibit that highlights technology, art, and artificial intelligence. BFA partnered with OpenAI to take utilize their GPT-3 natural language model to create an AI-infused trivia bot with a 108 character split flap interface. Users are prompted to ask a question on a desktop computer terminal. Solair-E then processes the question and displays the result on the split flap board. Participants are encouraged to ask many questions to test how life-like the AI performs. Did the AI understand the question? Was the answer correct?
